Quagga mussels attach themselves to a number of surfaces including boat hulls, engine intakes, livewells, bilges, anchor lines, water intake valves, canals, pipes, aqueducts and dams. This causes increased maintenance costs. In the United States, Congressional researchers estimated that invasive mussels alone cost the power industry $3.1 billion from 1993-1999, while their impact on industries, businesses and communities totals more than 5 billion.

So how can us boaters help? Easy. Inspect and clean you water vessel (powerboat, sailboat, bassboat, jetski, zodiac, yes, all of ‘em) after removing it from every waterway. It is really very easy and takes little time and we’ve also recently discovered that some of our favorite boat cleaning products make this job even easier.

We were told recently the bio-kleen boat and trailer passed the mussel inspection at Lake Powell in Utah with flying colors. Not a single quagga mussel was found in spite of the fact that the boat originates from Michigan, a state that has a high population of the mussel in the waterways. Bio-Kleen credits the easy inspection to cleaning the bilge with the bilge cleaner after boating in every waterway. A quaternary sanitizer included in the product keeps the bilge and livewells free of invasive species eggs. Also cleaning the hull, props, exhaust pipes, trailers, anchor and dock lines with hull cleaner will kill the mussels and eggs due to the phosphoric blend in the cleaner. Not to mention it dissolves unsightly calcification and scum lines at the same time. Dual action – that’s what I’m talking about… Be sure to take a few minutes after pulling you boat from each waterway to protect your boat and the environment from these nasty invaders. Think of the alternative – mussel infestations will close your local waterway. Yeah, that’s what we thought.

The League of American Bicyclists announced its Spring 2010 Bicycle Friendly Communities in April. The City of Portage, Michigan received the League’s Bronze designation, along with two other Michigan Cities (Lansing and Marquette). Ann Arbor has been awarded Silver level and been on the list since 2005. Grand Rapids and Traverse City have been awarded Bronze level and on the list since 2009. Michigan ranks 16 out of 50 States for Bicycle Friendly Communities, receiving a grade A in Education & Encouragement. The top three Platinum communities are Boulder CO, Davis CA and Portland OR.

The Bicycle Friendly Communities Program demonstrates how communities across the country see the importance of promoting bicycling to improve public health, improve quality of life, protect the environment and provide better transportation choices. The League of American Bicyclists promotes bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation and works through advocacy and education for a bicycle-friendly America.

The City of Portage, Michigan constructed a bikeway system that was inaugurated in 1989 and has grown to nearly 60 miles of bikeways and trails throughout the city and parks system. The bikeway system connects neighborhoods, shopping areas, city parks, schools, businesses and other points of interest.

Construction is planned to connect Portage’s bikeway system to the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail. After construction is complete the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail system will connect Battle Creek to the Kal Haven Trail, which stretches from Kalamazoo all the way to the Lake Michigan shoreline in South Haven.

Bio-Kleen Parked @ Captian Rons

Finally, the day had come to witness the largest unsanctioned racing event of the season. What started as a friendly battle among lake residents to see who had the fastest machine on the water has become known by many as the fourth holiday weekend of the summer. Today, professionals and amateurs compete against each other and clock their speeds for the Top Gun honor. Boats more than 22 feet in length are allowed to run in classes by length, hull design, size of motors and number of motors. Proceeds from the Shootout benefit the Lake-area rescue teams, Habitat for Humanity and other charitable organizations.

The temperatures are the highest we’ve seen yet since heading into Missouri and the day looks like it should shape up to be beautiful, calm and sunny. The day is sure to be action packed. A majority of the buzz around the lake is of course centered around last years Top Gun winner; David Scott and his 50ft Mystic racer with throttle man John Tomlinson (then sponsored by Bud Light). The crowd is also quite intrigued to see if the Miss Geico boat will be on the list of competitors this year. The boat passed up the Shootout last year for another race, but up to this point has been seen as Scott and Tomlinson’s biggest competition.

There’s also a lot of hype about a brand new addition to the Shootout, a head-on-head drag race; two boats running down the course at one time. One world class racer and well known lake member, Bob Morgan, is an advocate for the drag style boat race for the shootout. He’s finally gotten his wish for 2009 as race officials have approved the head-on-head competition. Bob Morgan himself in the Bad Moon Risin boat will go nose to nose with Bob Bull in the CMS boat. The talk is they’re scheduled for the best of three races.

Nauti Marine's Saturday Shootout Run

Dave Scott and Nauti Marine, 2008 Top Gun, holder of multiple world speed records, nearly a dozen national titles and almost as many world titles, is the team to try and beat this year at the Shootout. For the past eight years, Scott and all the Nauti Marine boats have raced under Anheuser Busch sponsorship. About this time last year InBev, the new owners of Anheuser Busch, announced they were no longer interested in sponsoring powerboat racing; which left the team looking for sponsorship elsewhere. Instead, Scott decided to race under his own Nauti Marine banner.

Last year Scott intended to race the Mystic fueled with methanol, but on the Thursday before race weekend a motor broke. So they spent the night changing the out the methanol motors back to gasoline. Obviously things did work out for them, still holding onto Top Gun status. They’ve still been testing methanol motors and plan on running the two 2,400-hp New Century alcohol-fueled engines for the Shootout this year.

The Nauti Marine boat seemed to be off to a great start on their first run on Saturday; but 2/3 of the way down the course something goes wrong. There’s a noticeable change in the sound of the motors and the output of the boat. They seem to blow another motor, but still finish the run with an impressive speed somewhere in the 160′s I believe.

CMS & Bad Moon Risin Drag

There was much more action for the day from the racers and the crowds. We captured video not only of the Nauti Marine first run, but impressive runs from Flight Club, the Mercedes Boat, D&M Motorsports, Mikes Thunder Marine, Shogren, Bob Bull and the CMS boat in a single run and the first drag between CMS and Bob Morgan in the Bad Moon Risin boat. CMS starts the head-to-head race out in front, but about mid way Bad Moon Risin easily coasts by. From our view it looks as if Morgan leaves Bull deep in his wake. Turns out it was close to a photo finish. The final details are debatable, but the word is this first race goes to Bob Morgan and Bad Moon Risin.

It was a great start to the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout 2009. Beautiful weather, hot enough for the passengers of the hundreds of rafting boats to enjoy the water. Great speeds and action from the racers along with a few new twists. The opening day was not without its challenges though. There were multiple runs tainted with radar issues; forcing the racers to possibly fore-fit a great speed and run again later. There were also some staging issues, not allowing them to pack in all the desired runs for the day and sometimes moving at a slow pace in between runs.

Fire Rescue Team Lends a Hand

Then there’s the broken, wavy line of rafting boats that zig-zags the border of the entire course and then some. It’s really the only way to stay put safely with all those boats, but the number of boats with 30ft anchor lines in 75ft+ water definitely outweighed those that were prepared. Put that amount of boats and weight on not enough anchor and your bound to drag. And drag they did… into the course enough times the police and fire patrols had to discipline and assist the boats back out of the course boundaries or the race would not go on. Thankfully they do their jobs well and the spectators were very receptive. After all, everybody’s there to watch the boats and have a good time and if the boats can’t run there’s no race, and it’s all over for everyone.

Saturday had some smooth runs and good speeds, but there’s still a lot more in store for the final day of the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout 2009.

The sunshine and clear skies came out just in time to view the expansive wind power project south of Joliet, IL. The project must still be in the early stages as none of the massive turbines that were scattered across acres of soybean and corn fields were not yet turning. There must have been nearly 60+ already erected and more on the way. You could see large cranes in the distance piecing together these green energy giants. They seemed so small and fragile in the distance across the farm lands. That was until we bore witness to a single blade being hauled in on an extra long semi tractor trailer, the longest I’ve ever seen. That really put the size of the turbines and the project into perspective.

Down the freeway we learned just how skilled a crop dusting pilot must be. We first saw a small, single engine plane flying very close to the horizon. About a mile later the plane was just over the freeway, facing oncoming traffic. The plane then quickly pulled up and sharply cut back down to the left hand side of the road; making a pass across the length of the soybean field at speeds well over ours and at heights that wouldn’t allow a large truck to pass under.

When that row was finished, the pilot again cut over the freeway, making a large loop over the road, as if all the motorists came to a traveling aerobatics show; then on to the next row. The plane and it’s pilot continued to dance in the sky amidst the highway travelers, as if they were stuck to the pavement with glue and he was making up his own free flowing paths as he goes. Though the skies filled our excitement for the time being, we still had a very long road ahead of us and at the end of it is what’s really on our mind; the green waters of the Lake of the Ozarks.

We made it down just in time for a late dinner at Captian Ron’s where the Shootout is hosted for the second year in a row. Our goal for the next day was to set up our vendor booth, service some local dealers around the Lake of the Ozarks and get the biokleen boat launched to be ready for Friday’s pokerrun.

The first goal for the second day at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout 2009 was to put up the Bio-Kleen vendor booth at Captain Ron’s. This is the second year the Shootout is put on by Captain Ron’s and spearheaded by the owner, Ron Duggan. Last year was great, so we knew this year would be even better and well organized (always a huge plus). It was easy to find the biokleen booth space, as we’re in the same spot as last year, F21; a cozy spot nestled in front of a large tree, right in front of dock 3, just on the corner of Cannonball Beach.

We got the tent and booth all set up and after some lunch, we’re off to several marinas around lake of the ozarks selling bio-kleen marine & rv products. We took the winding, narrow, down-sloping roads from high ground of highway 54 to the marinas at the lake. We made deliveries to Millers Landing, Bidgeview Marine and Village Marina. We also had some time to demo some new products with Village.  Then we dropped the Biokleen Toter off at Excess Detailin’ for a wash. By the time we picked the toter up it has been a very long day and the evening is fast approaching. We had to first pick up the biokleen boat from Bob Morgan’s shop, then get it in the water.

We proceeded down the even windier, extra narrow and slightly steeper “road” to the launch ramp by the Niagara Bridge.  We knew it may prove to be a difficult landing with the toter and much to our surprise we had some extra help when we arrived. Bob Morgan and the entire crew was there launching the Bad Moon Risin boat. It also started to rain at this point and by the time we got the boat in the water… it was a torrential down pour, with cracks of lightening and high gust winds. It was difficult enough driving a motorhome down a paved road back to the rv park; I was just imagining Tim on the lake, getting the boat to the docks at Captain Rons.

We made it by land, and by water, safely back to Captain Rons. It continued to rain, blowing down branches, washing out roads and pushing all the fresh sand at Captain Ron’s beaches back into the lake. We were all soaked… completely, and were only interested in getting out of our wet clothes, drying out and starting fresh tomorrow. The biokleen boat is a pace boat for the pokerrun and the vendor booths open up as well. The official start of the Lake of the Ozarks 2009 Shootout is finally here.

Nine Banded Armadillo

Texas is a land of cattle, horses and armadillos. The armadillo is a fascinating creature to visitors from the north. They first foraged into Texas across the Rio Grande from Mexico in the 1800’s. Armadillo is Spanish for “Little Armored One”. There are 20 species of armadillos which are distinguished by the number of bands on their armor. They range from the 5 foot Giant Armadillo to the Pink Fairy Armadillo of 5 inches. All species are native to the Americas. In the U.S. the sole resident is the Nine-banded Armadillo.

Armadillos are prolific diggers and build burrows near creeks and streams feeding on ants and grubs. The Nine-banded Armadillo tends to jump straight up in the air when frightened and consequently collides with the undercarriage or fenders of passing cars, unfortunately the reason you see so many fur-belly side up beside the road.

Southwestern Decor

They first came into Texas crossing the Rio Grande River from Mexico in the 1800’s. Interestingly enough they have the ability to remain underwater up to 6 minutes and inflate their stomach with air to float and swim. The Nine-banded Armadillo also serves science through its unusual mammal reproductive system in which genetically identical quadruplets are born in every liter. During the great depression the species was actually hunted for it’s meat in East Texas where it was known as “Hoovers Hog’.

There are interesting energy solutions across Texas including everything from old windmills pumping water to livestock in vast desolate acreages, to big oil wells drilling the liquid gold, to wind turbines converting the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy which is then converted to electricity.

Turbines used in wind farms are usually a three bladed tapered airfoil shape and pointed into the wind by computer controlled motors. The blades rotate 10-22 rpms and range in length from 65-130 feet and the steel towers range from 200-300 feet tall – making for an awesome sight across the landscape. All turbines are equipped with shut down features to avoid damage at high wind speeds.

Saturday May 9th the Windpower 2009 conference was held at McCormick Place, Chicago. It was reported that the 2008 wind energy production was at 25,170MW installed, putting the U.S. as #1 in the world ahead of Germany. Texas with 7116MW accounts for ¼ of that and Iowa second with 2790MW. The wind industry employs 85,000 people in the U.S. The Obama administration wants the U.S. to be producing 20% of it’s electricity from wind by 2030. Amazingly we are on track to do it.

Closer to home, Mas Tech, a small factory in Manistee, is churning out wind turbines helping usher in a new greener era for Michigan manufacturing. According to Next Energy, a renewable energy group in Detroit, “Some 400 other Michigan manufacturers have the capabilities to craft gear boxes, brakes, generators and other parts for utility size wind turbines with the structures selling for two million dollars a piece.” One federal report identifies Michigan as one of the four states that could create up to 30,000 new jobs from wind energy.

Home of the 72oz

Back in Texas, the state is also known for its great steak houses. A popular spot on the trail is the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo. Their claim to fame is the Free 72 oz. steak dinner… if you can eat it all in 1 hour. They say many have tried and many have failed, but reports over 8,000 hearty diners have done it including a 68 year old woman. I think we’ll have to pass, but you never know… maybe next year.

Church Old Town Albuquerque

We first traveled into Albuquerque, NM with the 10,600 foot Sandia Mountains surrounding the city. They affect the weather, making for perfect spring temperatures with the dry heat of 80˚ during the day and 65˚ at night. The winds that gust over the Sandias make it a great home for over 500 balloonists. Every evening the setting sun is like an artist painting the mountains in a palette of golds, pinks and reds. Old Town exemplifies a rich blend of Native American, Hispanic and western culture. Old Town has been the focal point of the community since 1706. Quiet hidden patios, winding brick garden paths, wrought iron and adobe studios display that distinct Southwestern flair.

Petroglyph Deer

Just west of town, over the Rio Grande River, lays the Petroglyph National Monument. Five ancient volcano spatter cones produced the black basalt that coated the rock, then oxidized creating the “desert varnish” that became the canvas for the Pueblo inhabitants for thousands of years (1300-1680). In seventeen square miles there exists over 25,000 carved images picked or abated to expose the lighter rock underneath. Some of the petroglyphs have meaning only known to the Pueblo that made them; others represent tribal markers, religious entities or just an interpretation of the natural world around them.

Tent Rocks

To the north of Albuquerque, near Santé Fe is the Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument. Kasha-Katuwe means “white cliffs” in the traditional Keresan language of the Pueblo de Conchiti. The cone-shaped formations are the products of the Jemez volcanic eruptions that occurred 6-7 million years ago and left pumice, ash and tuff deposits over 1,000 feet thick. Perched on many of the tapering hoodoos are boulder caps that protect the softer pumice and tuff below. The tent rock formations vary in height from a few feet to 90 feet and make for great roadside landscaping.

The popular street party on McCullough Blvd. kicked off the festivities on Thursday with a record number of vendors displaying the hottest race boats, pleasure boats and tow vehicles. For the second year the Bio-Kleen Team was there to showcase their Poker Run cigarette boat and marine and motorcycle cleaners. Bio-Kleen cleaning products can now be found all over the place in the Lake Havasu area including: Absolute Marine, Savage Marine, HTM2, Ron’s Custom Detail, Prestige, Car Toyz Car Wash, Hy-Tech, Pure Performance, High Torque Marine, Red Line Speed, Absolute Speed and Lake Havasu RV & Boat Storage. Way to go Havasu on keeping the waters clean.

The poker run on Friday turned out to be a beautiful 90 degree day. In this challenging economic climate it was phenomenal to have 170 boats participating. Each boat classed by speed from A-G paraded through the packed channel, under the London Bridge and on to the card stations. Lunch was hosted at the Nautical Resort, as well as the Friday night card turn in, which included munchies, brews and a live band.

Saturday the Lake of the Ozarks style Shootout was back again this year at Desert Storm. Hundreds of boats and spectators gathered at Rotary Park and watched the boats roar through the one mile course. Extremely fast boats in every size competed including Rick Bowling in Gone Again; a 38 foot Talon with a top speed of 141 mph. The King Of The Desert with a top speed of 174mph in 17.53 seconds was Greg Olson from Alliance, Nebraska in a 2007 thirty three foot Daytona called Fatal Attraction (video below). The awards banquet was held at the Lake Havasu Aquatic Center. The winners of the poker run hands were announced: 1st place was Jesse Lovato from Corona , CA with 4 of a kind aces, 2nd place with 4 of a kind jacks was Gunnar Strunz from Anaheim, CA and 3rd place went to Shelby Seder with 4 of a kind tens. $20,000 in cash and prizes were given away to the participants.

On Sunday the POPRA were in Thompson Bay with exciting close up offshore racing. One of the P2 boats rolled completely over, check the video below. The MTI CRC racing team took home the honors of the day. The 4 day spectacular was a successful, nearly incident free, safe event with all of the proceeds donated to the Soldiers Angels to help support the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

MINNEAPOLIS (March 11, 2009) – Nearly an entire season has unfolded during the inaugural AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series, yet the most important race of the year remains as racers battle for the biggest prize of them all – a year end championship. When the factory teams and standout independents set-up shop along the hills of Lake Geneva, March 20-22, many will face the biggest race of their career as every lap, of every race will have an impact on the year-end final standings.
    Perhaps nowhere is that pressure cooker atmosphere more apparent than in the Pro Super Stock field, where Garth Kaufman (Arctic Cat) and Levi LaVallee (Polaris) enter the weekend in a tie for the year-end crown. With a total of 195 points each, every race will matter, and with Ryan Simons (Arctic Cat) close on their heels just 10 points back, its anybody’s title to win.
    “It should be an exciting weekend,” said Bob Coffin, Race Director for the International Series of Champions (ISOC). “With our scoring system, a racer has the opportunity to capture as many as 37 points in a weekend, that’s if they win both their heat race and the final. With the points so tight, one bobble or mechanical issue can ruin their chances. It puts a lot of pressure on not just the racer, but the entire crew to perform.”
    In Pro Open, the chase is not as tight, but the top five are still in the hunt mathematically speaking. Polaris rider TJ Gulla sits atop the pack with 198 points, just 13 points ahead of his teammate Levi LaVallee and 25 points in front of first year pro Brett Bender (Polaris). Close behind are Brett Turcotte (Arctic Cat) and Garth Kaufman (Arctic Cat).
    In Pro Women, the margin is relatively comfortable for Soldonta, Alaska racer Carly Davis (Arctic Cat) with 209 points. She sits ahead of JC Hupe – 188 points (Arctic Cat) and April Moritz – 169 points (Arctic Cat).   

Davis, Tremblay, Ebert and LePage Face-Off for Semi Pro Crowns
Equally exciting and tension filled is the race for the Semi Pro year-end championships. Here the cream of the crop have been trading wins and podium positions all season long and the close point race atop both the Open and Super Stock standings is evidence of this.
    In Semi Pro Open, Quebec hot-shoe Tim Tremblay (Ski-doo) holds a slim 11-point margin over Minnesota native Bobby LePage (Polaris). Close behind them just 15 points out is Dan Ebert (Arctic Cat) and on his tail is Swedish sensation Christian Salemark (Arctic Cat) with only a 20-point deficit.  
    “The racing action in the Semi Pro ranks has probably been some of the most closely contested and competitive of the season,” said ISOC Owner John Daniels. “Every week someone new steps up to take the win, and just when you think someone is going to break out from the pack to establish themselves, a crash, mechanical or fresh face comes on strong to change it up again. Lake Geneva will be interesting to say the least.”
    Such change was evident during the previous AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series race in Hayward, Wisconsin in the Semi Pro Super Stock final. Both Cory Davis (Arctic Cat) and Ebert encountered trouble on the track and finished deep in the field, while Tremblay and Salemark capitalized. A look at the point standings in Semi Pro Super Stock shows Davis with a slim 4-point margin over Tim Tremblay, with Ebert (31 points back) and Salemark (47 points back).   

Hentges Racing Leads Woody’s Team Challenge
Year-end supremacy is more than an individual effort on the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series tour. Every member of a national race team must bring their A-game in order to not only win but to simply compete. This reality is what prompted the ISOC crew along with help from Woody’s Traction Products to implement the Woody’s Team Challenge. The Team Challenge is designed to reward the best performing “team” for both the race weekend and the season, and with one race remaining there remains $25,000 up for grabs as part of the year-end payout with $10,000 going to the winning team.
    Currently the Hentges Racing effort which fields such riders at Brett Bender, Bobby LePage and TJ Gulla is leading the pack with 801 points, but with points awarded in both Pro and Semi Pro classes, they can add up quickly and teams trailing Hentges such as Christian Brothers Racing and HC Racing are still in the hunt for the $10,000 top prize.

The 53rd Annual Los Angeles Boat Show opened February 7th at the Los Angeles Convention Center, where attendees were able to see Team AMSOIL’s silver Skater up close.  The show featured a staged indoor race compound, complete with the Team’s Freightliner that tows the boat and all support vehicles.  Many people enjoyed viewing the race boat in its titled position on the trailer, complete with a light positioned to illuminate the inside of the cockpit.  A large display of AMSOIL products were showcased as well as various checkered flags achieved by the Team.  Hero cards were given out to race fans and poster size versions of the hero cards were framed near the boat.  Team T-shirts were also available for puchase.      

Not to be outdone by the AMSOIL festivities in Los Angeles, the race boat was well represented in Teague Custom Marine’s booth in the Miami International Boat Show as well.  The Miami Boat Show opened on February 12th and continued through February 16th.  Banners featuring lists of team achievements and different photos of the AMSOIL boat were suspended over 10 feet in the air around the perimeter of the booth.  The most impressive display was a near life size photo backdrop of the AMSOIL boat for all to see. Bob Teague was on hand to answer questions and greet race fans during both boat shows.  

Team AMSOIL captured virtually every title possible in the Cat Lite Class during the 2008 racing season. The Team is the current OPA Cat Lite High Points Champion, OSS National and High Points Cat Lite Champion, and SBI Super Cat World Champion.  Team AMSOIL is also the holder of the OSS World Endurance record for Miami to Bimini and back, and captured the POPRA World Kilo Record in its class with an official average speed of 131.981mph.  

Team AMSOIL has been diligently preparing over the winter season and is almost ready for the boat and support trailers to hit the road!  Bob Teague and Paul Whittier are eager to start out the new race season, with the first race in Biloxi, Mississippi, scheduled for March 26-29.
