Liberal Arts College to offer Master of Sustainable Business degree starting fall 2010

Aquinas College has developed a new Master of Sustainable Business (MSB) degree – the first program of its kind to be offered in the upper Midwest that will build upon the undergraduate sustainable business program already offered by the liberal arts college.

“With the launch of this new program, prospective students and employers will become natural-system thinkers who can respond and influence change in local and global conditions, positively affecting people, profit and the planet,” said Matthew Tueth, Ph.D., Steelcase Professor of Sustainable Business and chairman of the Sustainable Business Department. “We recognize the strategic benefit that sustainable business delivers to commerce inside our communities and we’re pleased to offer an even deeper educational opportunity in the sustainable business movement.”

Aquinas College, already a leader in sustainable business (SB) education, has built the new graduate program upon the regional and national success of its undergraduate program in sustainable business. The MSB degree will be comprised of six conventional business courses, currently offered in the College’s Master of Management program, along with six sustainable business courses. Graduate students in the MSB program will complete 12 courses (36 credit hours) over a typical 18-24 month period. Courses in the MSB program will be offered in eight-week segments, beginning this fall.

For graduates of the Master of Management (MM) program, the College is currently reviewing which credits will be applicable to meeting requirements for the Master of Sustainable Business degree.

“A Master of Sustainable Business degree will allow students and employers to benefit by obtaining skills, knowledge and the understanding needed to not only restore environmental integrity and build healthy communities, but also maximize profitability within the work sector,” said Deborah M. Steketee, Ph.D., associate professor of sustainable business and executive director for the Center for Sustainability at Aquinas.

Today, technology innovator, Virtual Spectator and Ambition Lifestyle announced the launch of PowerboatPro.com, a news portal for official powerboat news from all around the world.

PowerboatPro.com keeps fans informed and engaged throughout the season by allowing them to follow their favorite class of powerboat racing in one single location. Powerboat racing classes that will be featured on PowerboatPro include U.I.M. Grand Prix of the Sea, F1H20, Class 1Zapcat, Powerboat P1 Superstock and Powerboat P1 U.S.A. News from the governing bodies of the sport including Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) and Offshore Super Series (OSS) will also be published.

As the world’s central hub for all powerboat related news, PowerboatPro.com will include the latest information on racing, gear, teams, sponsors, boat manufacturers and venues. In addition, there will be current interviews with some of the leaders in the sport, product reviews, photo and video galleries, and spectator feedback. Everything powerboat related, including the parties, the controversies and the lifestyle.

As a longtime fan of powerboat racing, Peter VanGameren, CEO of Ambition Lifestyle has an excellent understanding of what spectators, participants, race promoters, teams and governing bodies want to know. “As a fan of powerboat racing, I had been walking around with an idea to one day make an outstanding powerboat news portal. It is our firm belief that all parties involved will benefit by having all of their news and information from global powerboat racing together in one central hub, and our current partners see the value that PowerboatPro.com can bring them.”

I am very much looking forward to having a place where we can get the message out about what we’re trying to accomplish in the sport of offshore powerboat racing and the philanthropic organizations we are partnering with,” said Maisy Page, Founder and Program Director of OSS Cares. “As a fan of all things fast, I’m very excited to have a place to go for all of the latest news and events in marine motorsports.”

“The VSConnect™ platform is perfect for the sport of powerboating,” said VS Executive Producer Curtis Worthy. “I’m looking forward to great relationship with Ambition Lifestyle and applying the technology to powerboat spectators and partners worldwide.”

Virtual Spectator gained a reputation as an innovator of 3D tracking technology for the Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup. The company has now applied the technology to VSConnect™ allowing fans to follow powerboating.

VS tracking technology will eventually allow users to track their favorite class or with VSConnect™ interactive maps, complete with geo tagged photos, schedules and video updates. Countdown timers to each event will allow fans to find out when the next race is, in any participating class- anywhere in the world.

Powerboatmag.com offers new interactive content for power boating enthusiasts and downloadable boat tests from 1990

Looking toward the future with interactive ways to communicate with its readers, Powerboat magazine is also making the most of its 42-year heritage — all part of a new Web site from the “World’s Leading Performance Boating Magazine.”

Loaded with resourceful and entertaining features, Powerboatmag.com is now the ultimate complement to the print publication that has informed readers since 1968. From videos to blogs and breaking news, the site provides enthusiasts with their daily performance-boating fix.

In addition to a variety of stories and advice columns to read, users can check out more than 40 years of Powerboat covers, watch user-generated videos in the “Your View” video section and enjoy pictures from past and recent events in the Photo Gallery.

Perhaps the most resourceful tool on the new site for someone looking to purchase a boat (or for those interested in reading about past models), is the downloadable boat tests component. Visitors can search through more than 1,300 reviews from Powerboat’s Test Team from 1990-present.

Various industry leaders will regularly provide blogs looking at the changing industry. Along with the Powerboat editors, contributors include Steve David, driver of the world champion Oh Boy! Oberto hydroplane; Marc Granet, driver of the world champion Miss GEICO catamaran; Scott Shogren, owner of Shogren Performance Marine in Illinois; and John Tomlinson, Powerboat Test Team driver and TNT Custom Marine owner.

“Not only does the new site showcase the history of the sport, it gives our site visitors a look at the future of boating,” said Jason Johnson, Powerboat’s managing editor. “It’s a perfect companion to the print product.”

Powerboatmag.com will offer more exciting components in the near future, such as classic race photos provided by the Historic Offshore Race Boat Association, tips on what to look for when obtaining boat insurance and much more.

A regional network of manufactures aims to connect capable companies to the wind turbine supply chain. The West Michigan Wind Manufacturers Network (WMWMN) is composed of sixteen regional companies already working in wind energy. The manufactures have come together to help promote the regions capabilities in the alternative energy industry. The WMWMN has the potential to serve as a one-stop directory for turbine original equipment manufactures (OEMs) to find qualified suppliers. In turn, this should also help bring in low-cost leads and business for the suppliers, allowing them to focus on competitiveness and profit.

The network was formed after an analysis uncovered 800 West Michigan companies that had potential to manufacture wind energy components. The WMWMN will no doubt aim to network companies working the wind energy sector who might not otherwise know each other existed.

Because of the regions expansive manufacturing expertise and the thousands of parts in just one wind turbine, West Michigan can enter the market quickly; building off existing capabilities. The region also has another advantage, experience with integrated systems. This gives the turbine OEMs the opportunity to consolidate their supply chain by purchasing from as few vendors as possible; a process the manufacturers are accustomed to from the automotive and office furniture industries.

Though the wind energy industry shows great promise, the current demand may not be as impressive as one may think. Policies, government actions and incentives have given the industry some wind behind its sail; but the potential for the industry is considerably lower then estimates so far. As demand in America increases it only makes sense that the components, with their shear size and shipping cost, come from local facilities.

Arctic Cat has voluntarily recalled about 3,000 snowmobiles due to fire hazard. The company is working in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The sleds being recalled pose a potential fire hazard to consumers from oil leaking into the engine compartment. Arctic Cat has received 33 reports of oil leaks, including eight vehicle fires. The CPSC also said the fuel tank could come into contact with the engine, possibly wearing and causing fuel leakage. There have yet to be any reports on fuel leakage from tank wearing and no injuries have been reported.

The recall involves MY 2009 Arctic Cat Z1 Turbo, Z1 Turbo Sno Pro and TZ1 Turbo model snowmobiles.

The vehicles were sold at Arctic Cat dealerships nationwide from June 2008-July 2009 for $12,500-$14,300.

The fuel lines on the snowmobiles can make contact with one another, which could result in a fuel leak. This can pose a fire hazard to consumers, the report stated. There have been eight reports of fuel leaks, but no reports of fires or injuries.

The model and serial number identification decal is located on the right side of the tunnel below the seat. The sleds were sold nationally between September 2006-March for about $8,600.

A coalition of recreational access groups moved today to join a lawsuit challenging Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plans covering nearly seven million acres in Utah. The motion was filed by the Trails Preservation Alliance (TPA), Colorado Off-Highway Vehicle Coalition (COHVCO), and BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC), all trails-based, grassroots recreation advocacy groups. The lawsuit was filed by eleven preservationist groups, led by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance. Through the suit, the plaintiffs hope to have the BLM plans declared illegal and set aside, and ask the Court to issue an injunction preventing activities authorized by the plans until BLM issues new decisions complying with a host of federal statutes. The lands at issue are located in the BLM Moab, Price, and Vernal Field Offices, which include iconic destinations for all types of backcountry recreationists.

The lawsuit was originally filed on December 17, 2008, and targeted 77 lease sales for oil and gas drilling on BLM-managed lands. Those sales were halted by a temporary restraining order issued by the Court on January 17, 2009. The latest complaint, filed March 19, 2009, drops the claims against the oil and gas leasing projects, which BLM has apparently withdrawn. However, the current complaint adds claims addressing other uses, including off-highway vehicle use.

Team AMSOIL #77 Gears up for the 2009 Season after Race Boat is Displayed at Los Angeles Boat Show and Highlighted at Miami International Boat Show

The 53rd Annual Los Angeles Boat Show opened February 7th at the Los Angeles Convention Center, where attendees were able to see Team AMSOIL’s silver Skater up close. The show featured a staged indoor race compound, complete with the Team’s Freightliner that tows the boat and all support vehicles. Many people enjoyed viewing the race boat in its titled position on the trailer, complete with a light positioned to illuminate the inside of the cockpit. A large display of AMSOIL products were showcased as well as various checkered flags achieved by the Team. Hero cards were given out to race fans and poster size versions of the hero cards were framed near the boat. Team T-shirts were also available for puchase.

Not to be outdone by the AMSOIL festivities in Los Angeles, the race boat was well represented in Teague Custom Marine’s booth in the Miami International Boat Show as well. The Miami Boat Show opened on February 12th and continued through February 16th. Banners featuring lists of team achievements and different photos of the AMSOIL boat were suspended over 10 feet in the air around the perimeter of the booth. The most impressive display was a near life size photo backdrop of the AMSOIL boat for all to see. Bob Teague was on hand to answer questions and greet race fans during both boat shows.

Team AMSOIL captured virtually every title possible in the Cat Lite Class during the 2008 racing season. The Team is the current OPA Cat Lite High Points Champion, OSS National and High Points Cat Lite Champion, and SBI Super Cat World Champion. Team AMSOIL is also the holder of the OSS World Endurance record for Miami to Bimini and back, and captured the POPRA World Kilo Record in its class with an official average speed of 131.981mph.

Team AMSOIL has been diligently preparing over the winter season and is almost ready for the boat and support trailers to hit the road! Bob Teague and Paul Whittier are eager to start out the new race season, with the first race in Biloxi, Mississippi, scheduled for March 26-29.
