Simple Steps to Go Green

  1. Use a more energy-efficient (08-09 model) refrigerator instead of a 2001 model or older. Annual savings = $63
  2. Turn down your gas hot water heater from 140 degrees to 120 degrees. Annual savings = $60
  3. Eat 1/4 less meat. Annual savings per person = $169
  4. Switch from 75-watt incandescent bulbs to 19-watt compact fluorescent bulbs.* Annual savings = $68
  5. Dry half your clothes on a clothes rack instead of using a dryer. Annual savings = $45
  6. Drive a car that gets 35 mpg instead of the national average of 25 mpg. Savings per Auto = $482 (@ $3.30/gal)
  7. Lower your thermostat by a dgree in the winter and raise it by a degree in the summer. Annual savings = $55
  8. Total Saving for these 7 easy steps = $942! Each step helps reduce greenhouse gasses as well.
  9. *If you buy the new energy saver fluorescent bulbs, take note: You cannot through them away! Take them to your local recycling center. They contain mercury and are toxic if broken (if you do break one, leave the area and allow it to air out as much as possible before returning). Surprisingly, even the packaging on these bulbs doesn’t tell you that (not on the ones I’ve seen); just “manage in accord with disposal laws.” Here’s a tip GE: if you want to promote green industry, educate your customers how not to pollute with your product.
